Demonstrating a Professional Body of Knowledge

Interdisciplinary Learning

Demonstrating a professional body of knowledge speaks to a teacher's ability to take information and synthesize it into a unique and palatable plan for learners in the classroom.  How we use the information we learn speaks to our ability to understand its benefit for students.

As a part of our Interdisciplinary Learning course at the University of Calgary, we were tasked with the job to combine 2-4 subject areas and present a fully formed and accessible unit plan for students.  This task required us to directly address the learning outcomes outlined in the program of study for all subject areas.  Being familiar with each POS was important to the success of our project. My cohort chose to focus on the topic of Social Media and its effect on happiness in students.  Due to the technical nature of the topic, we were able to incorporate a range of instructional strategies, including guest speakers, technology, self-reflection and collaboration.  The use of digital technology will play a major role in helping students meet desired outcomes.  Additionally, the use of technology provides differentiation opportunities to meet the learning needs of students.

Because social media is something that is worldwide, there is an opportunity for students to consider relevant local, provincial, national and international contexts and issues. Social media and its effect on people is not specific to us here in Calgary, students can see past themselves and engage with the local and global community.  Students are immersed in social media and therefore the topic is varied, engaging and relevant to students.

Through self-reflection and the final project of this unit, teachers will gain a deeper insight into who their students are and what they are interested in.  Students can rely on their backgrounds, prior knowledge and experiences to enrich the learning. A teacher who is attuned to their students' needs and progress can adjust and be flexible with plans based on what is disclosed and the nature of discussions.

Finally, as students work through this unit and connect to its outcomes, teachers and students gain insight into how [they] students develop as learners through a balance of formative and summative assessment experiences.
